Frank Sinatra-New York

New York Song:
Frank Sinatra began performing this song in 1978 at concerts in New York's Radio City Music Hall. His version was released on his triple album Trilogy: Past, Present and Future, which was very popular and brought the singer back in the public eye. "New York, New York" quickly became one of Sinatra's signature songs. While many songs have been written about New York City, no song has captured the pride and elegance of the city quite like this one. This song also popularized New York as the "City that never sleeps," which is true because many businesses are open 24 hours, but at the same time it also reflects that you are expected to always be at your best. The song is written from the perspective of an entertainer who leaves a small town and tries to make it in the city.

Music Style:
Sinatra would certainly have been considered a 'pop' singer before the "Rock and Roll" era, and the Classic Pop have perhaps been joined to describe Sinatra's style. In addition, Sinatra would and did tackle several styles and genres of music throughout his career, with differing degrees of success. Indeed, it is impossible to imagine the Sinatra after 1953 without the influence of jazz.
Pop music is characterised by:
  • Verse-chorus song structure.
  • Recording and production is considered more important than live performance.
  • Usually around 3 minutes in duration.
  • Dance orientated rhythms.
  • Attempts to follow current pop culture trends.
  • Focus on melodies and catchy hooks.
  • Chorus usually contrasts melodically and rhythmically with the verse.

Reason why I chose this song:
I chose this song because it is my mother’s favourite. She really likes this song because it reminds her of my grandfather who really loved Frank Sinatra. She has many of his albums and is always playing them on the cd player. After listening Sinatra’s songs so much I have learned most of it’s lyrics and enjoy singing them. When friends come to our house my mother always puts Sinatra's music, especially when my aunts or uncles come, because they also enjoy listening to his songs for the same reason.

How this song makes me feel
I love listening to Sinatra's music because his songs are very relaxing but at the same time it makes you feel good. When I listen to New York, New York somewhere outside my house it makes me feel comfortable, as if I were in my own home. It also makes me feel connected somehow to my grandfather.Even though I haven’t met my grandfather, because he passed away before I was born, it is as if listening to Frank Sinatra’s songs kept his memory alive.
